Advantages of a Green Roof

A green roof offers several advantages. Among other things a green roof extends the durability of a roof (sealing) and the thermal insulation is massively improved. So a green roof affects the maintenance costs of a house positively.

Extension of Durability of Roof Sealing
A green roof builds an effective protection of the sealing against UV-rays, hailstorm und frost. Tension caused by high fluctuation of temperature is avoided by a green roof. In this way a green roof permits a longer durability of the sealing of about 15 to 20 years.

Water Retainment and Cost Saving A green roof can according to the construction retain up to 90 % of the precipitation. A considerable quantity of the water evaporates; the remaining quantity drains temporally delayed. Due to a green roof drainpipes, gullies, etc. can be planned smaller and depending on the municipal sewage ordinance drainage fees can be saved. In Germany a green roof is accepted as compensation for soil sealing. Improved thermal Insulation Some green roof systems can meanwhile officially be taken into account for thermal insulation effects. Generally a green roof improves thermal insulation in winter as well as in summer.
Improved Microclimate/Creation of Habitat for Animals In urban agglomerations a green roof effects an improvement of microclimate by converting carbon dioxide to oxygen. The air cools down and gets moisturised. This affects positively to neighbouring housing and office spaces. Also for small animals, e.g. for birds and butterflies valuable habitat is reclaimed by a green roof. Reduction of Dust and harmful Emissions A green roof filters between 10 - 20 % of dust out of the air. Harmful substances in rainwater and air get bounded and retained.
Flood Prevention A green roof redounds by retainment of rainwater und minimization of peak values of precipitation flow to flood prevention. Improvement of Well-Being A green roof in direct surrounding of housing and office space improves effectively the well-being and is therefore used by city and landscape planners as large-areas design feature.
